Huff & Puff

In brief: To blow the ball across the opponent’s line.

Intensity: Medium

Introduction: This game was created by a group of trainers from the People’s Association (PA) National Community Leadership Institute (NACLI) (www.nacli.pa.gov.sg) which trains community leaders in Singapore. They also rent out their premises for programmes. This game was created by the trainers during a game-creation session in a workshop that I facilitated.

Prop(s): A ball & a 1m x 1m square boundary.

How to play:

  • Get into groups of 4s.
  • Mark out a 1-metre x 1-metre square area.
  • Place a soft, light ball in the centre of the square area.
  • Each member takes up position on one side of the square.
  • Attempt to blow the ball towards the opponent’s line and prevent it from crossing over yours.balls-huff-puff-800pix

Caution:

  • Watch out for breathlessness.

Variation(s):

  1. Instead of blowing, use a hard piece of cardboard or file to ‘fan’ the ball.

Notes to the Facilitator:

Use any large square floor tiles available at the venue. If there aren’t any, stick 4 A4-sized sheets of paper to create the area. A smooth surface will make it more challenging than say, a carpeted surface.
