In brief: Alternate hands/legs, then pass signal.
Intensity: Low
Introduction: A slower and more complex impulse game. Best for groups of 15 to 20 people.
Prop(s): None
How to play:
- The participants form a circle.
- Ask the members to sit/kneel down with their palms on the floor.
- Each person has to alternate his/her hands with the hands of the person next to him/her (see picture).
- The objective is to pass the signal (e.g. tapping of the floor) around the circle in the fastest time possible.

Variation(s):
- The same variations as ‘Superconductor’ and ‘Catch the Impulse’ can be used.
- There is a way to play ‘Alterntions’ without sitting or kneeling down on the floor. Get the participants to form a circle while standing or sitting on their chairs. Ask them to place their palms on the thighs of their partners sitting or standing next to them – their left palm on the right thigh of the person on their left and their right palm on the left thigh of the person on their right. Follow the procedures in the book (p.g.19), where the signal is passed by tapping on the thighs of their partners.
- Here is an add-on to Variation 2. Apart from tapping on the thighs, add the tapping of the feet on the ground to increase the level of complexity. This is how the signal is passed when it reaches you, assuming the signal is passed from left to right:
- The person on your left whose palm is on your left thigh will tap his/her palm =>
- This is followed by you tapping your left foot =>
- The person on your right whose plam is on your right thigh will tap his/her palm =>
- Next, you will tap your right foot =>
- This is followed by you tapping your palm on the left thigh of the person on your right, and the signal is passed along.
- I conducted a teambuilding segment for a group of Executives in a hotel as part of their workplan retreat. I started with the ‘Superconductor’. Now, I could not possibly ask this bunch of shirt-&-tie gentlemen and well-dress-with-high-heels ladeies to sit down on the floor to play the ‘Alternations’, can I? Here is an alternative to playing this game while standing up. Get the players to form a circle, place their hands on the shoulders of the members on their left and right (see picture – right). Group members will tap their hands on the shoulders in a consecutive manner.
